'Municipal body should be ashamed': Frustrated Bengaluru techies & students fix dangerous road after BBMP inaction

IT News Desk / Updated on Jun 25, 2024, 09:53 IST

It's no secret that Bengaluru's roads can be dangerous. Potholes, silt buildup, and poor maintenance make many streets unsafe for commuters. While many resign themselves to endless complaints, few take action to make a difference and that is what one determined Bengaluru techie, along with a group of innovative students, decided to do.

The busy Balagere Road between Kadubeesanahalli and Varthur had become a danger zone. Silt buildup made the road slippery for two-wheelers and hazardous for pedestrians.

Bengaluru's civic body, the BBMP, cited a lack of funds and abandoned the road's maintenance, forcing the community to take action.

Refusing to accept this neglect as their fate, several Bengaluru techies and residents decided to make a change.

They organised a community cleanup, where IT engineers, techies, and school children donned gloves and armed themselves with cleaning tools.

Together, they tackled nearly 3 kilometers of silt buildup that had taken over an entire lane in both directions.

This initiative resonated deeply with the community. One person remarked, "Techies in Bengaluru work for corporates during weekdays, earn, pay taxes, and spend their weekends fixing BBMP’s neglected issues."

Another added, "This is shocking. Bangalore municipal bodies should be ashamed of themselves for harassing honest tax-paying citizens."

The criticism of the BBMP was strong, with comments like, "What a curse BBMP is. First, citizens pay high taxes, then they have to do BBMP's duties. If citizens have to do their work, then why collect taxes?" and "This is a shame on the civic body responsible for maintaining infrastructure. If people do your work, what should they pay taxes for? And will you do their work?"

Well, the moral of the story: "Be the change that you wish to see in the world."
