56-Year-Old Man Who Lived Underwater In Atlantic Ocean For 100 Days Becomes Younger By 10 Years

IT News Desk / Updated on May 21, 2024, 08:42 IST

The quest to reverse aging has been a long-standing challenge for scientists worldwide, with limited success. However, an unconventional experiment may have theoretically unlocked the holy grail of reversing aging. This breakthrough is based on the changes observed in the body of Joseph Dituri after he lived underwater for a record 100 days.

Who is Joseph Dituri

Dituri, also known as Dr. Deep Sea, set the world record in 2023 by spending 93 days inside a pod 6.7 meters below the surface in the Atlantic Ocean. Despite achieving a new world record, the US Navy veteran decided to extend his stay underwater, emerging only after completing 100 days.

Why he lived underwater for 100 days

"It was never about the record. It was about extending human tolerance for the underwater world and for an isolated, confined, extreme environment," Dituri said.

The extensive research, called Project Neptune 100, aimed to study how compression affects the human body. Soon after emerging from his pod, Dituri reported feeling significantly rejuvenated, although his height had reduced by half an inch due to water pressure.

How living underwater changed his life

Extensive medical examinations, including DNA tests, revealed that Dituri felt significantly rejuvenated because he had become biologically younger. After medical assessments, it was found that Dituri's telomeres, the DNA caps at the ends of chromosomes that typically shrink with age, had become 20 percent longer than three months earlier.

This biological marker suggested he had effectively turned back the clock by ten years. Additionally, Dituri’s stem cell count surged dramatically, his cholesterol levels dropped by 72 points, and his inflammatory markers were reduced by half. His sleep quality also improved remarkably, with 60 to 66 percent of his nights spent in deep REM sleep, an essential phase for physical and mental restoration.
