'You Are Not Real, I Want To Buy Your Username', Woman Gets Bullied By Another On Instagram

IT News Desk / Updated on May 11, 2024, 09:15 IST

It is not uncommon for more than one person to have the same name and surname. In a country like India, it is fairly common to have a classmate, colleague, or friend who shares the same name with you. While this is not a big issue, having more than one person with the same name can sometimes create inconvenience while signing up on popular online services like email or social media.

If you have a commonly used name, there is a high chance that you might get a message saying 'username already exists' while trying to sign up on a new platform. Most of us find workarounds by tweaking the username or adding a number to it. However, what happens if you are adamant about getting a username for yourself, even though it has already been taken by someone else?

Woman wants another person's username

Katherine Asplundh, an Instagram user, was left shocked after she was contacted by another woman with the same name, with an unusual demand. The woman, whose name was Katherine Drisc, changed it to Katherine Asplundh after getting married to Cabot Asplundh, a multi-billionaire from the US state of Pennsylvania. But when she tried to change her username on Instagram to Katherine Asplundh, she learned that it was already taken.

So the new Katherine Asplundh messaged the original Katherine Asplundh on Instagram saying, “Hi just wondering if I could purchase your username from you. I just got married and this is my new name.” The original Katherine Asplundh refused the request, saying "she would be banned from Instagram for selling her username."

Celebrities do it

The newly-married, however, told the other woman that it was not true and that she had purchased usernames in the past. "Celebrities do it all the time that’s how they all have their handles as their full names," she said.

Further, she went on to point out that @katherineasplundh was not active on Instagram and that she had changed usernames three times in the past and asked her to do it one more time.

Prove me you are real

When the woman refused again, the billionaire’s wife changed her tone and accused the other woman of impersonation and threatened to get her account banned for pretending to be someone else.

She even went on to demand proof from the other woman that her real name was Katherine Asplundh. At this point, the other woman had enough and told the newly-married that she was not going to give any proof that her name was real. Katherine Asplundh ended the conversation by saying she has reported the other woman for harassing her.
