Delhi Airport 'waterfall' receives sarcastic comparisons to Singapore Changi's iconic fountain

Following the collapse of a part of Delhi's airport roof, social media users ridiculed the city's poor infrastructure. Images of water streaming into the building drew similarities to Singapore's Jewel Changi Airport, which houses the world's highest indoor fountain.

Six persons were hurt and one died at Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 1 when a portion of the forecourt roof collapsed early Friday. The collapse happened after a night of heavy rain in the national capital.

All flights out of Delhi Airport's Terminal 1 were suspended on Friday morning, causing widespread disruption to travel arrangements. Meanwhile, other parts of the city were flooded after a night of thunderstorms and rain.

According to news agency PTI, the ceiling collapse at Delhi Airport Terminal 1 occurred less than four months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the opening of an overhaul to the terminal, which will allow it to handle 40 million passengers per year, up from 17 million before. 

According to Airports Council International, Delhi Airport handled 72 million passengers in 2023, making it one of the world's busiest. Terminals 1 and 2 serve domestic travellers, while Terminal 3 handles all foreign passengers.

Videos of water gushing down from the airport's leaking roof sparked a wave of social media jokes. The HSBC Rain Vortex at Singapore's Jewel Changi Airport is 40 metres tall, equivalent to a seven-story skyscraper, making it the world's highest indoor fountain.

"Changi Airport (Singapore) VS Delhi Airport," remarked one X user, who shared photos of the 7-story HSBC Rain Vortex Waterfall at Singapore Airport. 

“No need to go to Singapore, just go to Delhi and enjoy,” another person wrote. 

X user Neha called it “Same same but different.”
