In a Netflix documentary, "The Romantics," filmmaker Aditya Chopra revealed the behind-the-scenes struggle to cast Shah Rukh Khan in DDLJ. Their friendship blossomed during the filming of the 1993 movie "Darr," where Aditya served as an assistant director. However, convincing Shah Rukh to step into the role of a romantic lead was no easy feat, as the actor was anticipating action-packed roles.

When Aditya and his assistant director, Karan Johar, pitched the idea of DDLJ to Shah Rukh Khan, the actor wasn't enthused. He felt the script didn't align with his preferences. Despite Shah Rukh's reservations, Aditya remained convinced that he was the perfect fit for the character.

According to Shah Rukh Khan, DDLJ "was not the film" he wanted to hear.

Undeterred by Shah Rukh's initial reluctance, Aditya persistently visited the actor's sets for two months, tirelessly trying to sway him. Time was running short, and Aditya recalled a poignant moment on the set of another film, "Trimurti," where a fan expressed her dissatisfaction with Shah Rukh's recurring tragic roles.
