Viral Video: Baby Elephant Rescued From 30 Feet Deep Sand Well In Tamil Nadu, Reunites With Mother

Social media users applauded a team of Tamil Nadu forest officers in the Gudalur district of the Nilgiris for rescuing a juvenile elephant who had fallen into a deep sand well by accident. IAS official Supriya Sahu released brief video snippets of the rescue mission and complimented the crew for quickly reuniting the baby elephant with its mother.

"A very encouraging report has just arrived about the successful rescue and reuniting of a juvenile elephant in Tamil Nadu. Foresters from Tamil Nadu's Gudalur Forest Division in the Nilgiris have successfully recovered a juvenile elephant from a 30 foot deep sand well in a farmland where the young elephant had fallen by accident," Supriya Sahu wrote in the caption of her photo.

The rescue attempt lasted eight hours and required the team building a ramp so the elephant could walk out of the well. Meanwhile, the mother elephant was waiting for her young calf with the rest of the herd.

“After 8 hours of a challenging battle the team succeeded in making a ramp for the elephant to safely walk out of the well. After the rescue the team united the baby elephant with her mother who patiently waited nearby with the herd. Big appreciation to DFO Gudalur, Vengatesh Prabhu who led the operation with a team of 40 people from 3 am onwards,” the IAS officer added.
