Man claims shocking discovery at Area 51 via Google maps

There are several ideas concerning Area 51, but one of them may reveal something fascinating and disturbing about the site's history. Area 51 has become well-known for its tight security and the eerie atmosphere of mystery and intrigue that surrounds it. The hypotheses vary from bizarre to absolutely out of this world, with others believing the site contains crashed aliens.

What is Area 51 used for?

One specific use for the land was as a US Air Force test base. Many of the experimental aircraft produced by the United States during the Cold War got their start here.

That would certainly explain the level of secrecy, as well as why there are so many purported UFO sightings in the nearby area. However, the sparse and parched desert served another purpose during the Cold War.

This was the development of an innovation that would forever change human history and possibly bring it to an end.

This is, of course, the development of nuclear weapons. The photographs provided to Reddit from Google Earth depict a sequence of big craters in the countryside.

Some studies discovered that these matched the explosive strength of nuclear bombs tested in the area during the Cold War. During this time, governments developed increasingly stronger nuclear weapons. This meant that explosions were carried out, with some even constructing tiny 'nuke villages' nearby.

Who shared the images on Reddit?

One Redditor shared their results, claiming: "On Google Earth Pro (free desktop app), you can discover exactly which bomb created each crater. "This is the largest crater I could discover, at 0.23 miles across. It came from the US nuclear Hermosa and was detonated on April 2, 1985, at 20:00:00.09 GMT. "It was a 150-kiloton nuke."

The 'nuketown' is not the little multiplayer map from Call of Duty: Black Ops, but there may have been nuclear test sites there. These were fake buildings built to demonstrate the impact of nuclear weapons on US towns in case there was any doubt. They could provide information about the destructive capacity at various distances from the explosion, for example. However, some were not convinced, with one remarking, "Dude, those are UFO crash sites." While another asked, "Nukes? Pfft. "Clearly a Sarlacc Pit."
